IGN have written up a Nintendo 3DS Launch Guide where they answer a variety of questions in regards to Nintendo’s upcoming 3D handheld. One question listed below suggests that Pokémon Black and White Version feature enhanced Nintendo 3DS functionality.
Q. CAN I PLAY MY OLD GAMES?
A. The 3DS will be backwards compatible with all DS and DSi games. Those games will not be able to display imagery in 3D despite being used on the 3DS. However, some games, most notably Pokémon Black & White, will gain some enhanced functionality when played on the new system. These cases should be considered extremely rare, however.
Pokémon Black and White Version both contain DSi enhanced features where the built in camera can be used to video chat with others. The DSi also allows the games to connect to a WPA Wi-Fi connection, something Pokémon games have never been able to do in the past. If IGN are in fact correct then some exclusive aspect of the Nintendo 3DS, most probably the stereoscopic 3D will be compatible with Black and White.
GameFreak have had a Nintendo 3DS development kit since early 2010, Black and White have been in development for several years but 3DS exclusive features could have been implemented last minute. I guess we will have to wait and see for ourselves but maybe a 3D Pokémon adventure isn’t as far away as we originally thought.
Update: IGN have retracted their statement, either they leaked details they weren’t supposed to or they simply posted false information.
